I’m sure you’ve heard about or even experienced the fabled “runner’s high.” I encountered my own version a few Sundays back when, after 26.2 miles of huffing and puffing, I crossed the finish line of the Spirit of Survival Marathon in Medicine Park.
Unfortunately, the afterglow didn’t last long.
By Wednesday, I was flat on my back, laid low by a sore throat, fever and respiratory infection that would take another week (and a round of antibiotics and steroids) to heal.
I have always held the belief that exercise enhances a person’s immune resistance.
But, come to think of it, this is not the first time I’ve been laid low by illness in the days or weeks following a marathon.
So, what’s the story? Does exercise make me more prone to infection?
